No income tax — but WA Cares and Paid Family & Medical Leave premiums do come out of your check.

The two Washington payroll deductions

WA Cares Fund is a long-term-care insurance premium of 0.58% on every dollar of wages, with no cap (workers with an approved exemption pay nothing). Paid Family & Medical Leave has a 2026 total premium of 1.13% of wages up to the Social Security wage base; employers may withhold up to 71.43% of it from employees — about 0.81% of pay.

Washington vs California for tech salaries

For high earners, Washington's lack of an income tax outweighs its payroll premiums by a wide margin. Compare a $150,000 or $200,000 salary in the two states with the comparison tool.

Exempt from WA Cares?

If you have an approved WA Cares exemption, your employer stops withholding the 0.58% premium. Subtract that line from the result to see your paycheck.
