What's actually different on the paycheck

Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are identical in both states. The whole gap comes from two California lines: state income tax and SDI. Everything else — 401(k), health premiums, W-4 settings — works the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How much more do you take home in Texas than California?+

On a $100,000 salary a single filer keeps about $6,861 more per year in Texas ($79,180 vs $72,319). At $150,000 the gap grows to about $12,626.

Why is the difference so big?+

Texas has no state income tax and no state disability payroll tax. In California, wages pay state income tax (up to 13.3% plus 1% over $1 million) and SDI on every dollar.

Is Texas cheaper overall?+

Not always. Texas property taxes and some sales taxes are higher, and housing costs vary hugely by city. Taxes on wages are only one part of the picture.
