Missouri withholds 2% to 4.7% after a standard deduction that matches the federal one — no allowances to fill in.
How Missouri withholding works
Your employer annualizes your taxable wages (after pre-tax 401(k) and Section 125 benefits), subtracts the Missouri standard deduction for your MO W-4 filing status, and applies Missouri's brackets: 0% on the first $1,348, then 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4% and 4.5% in $1,348 steps, and 4.7% on everything over $9,436. The yearly amount is divided by your pay periods and rounded to the nearest dollar.
Most Missouri earners pay 4.7% at the margin
Because the top bracket starts at under $10,000 of taxable income, nearly every full-time worker's next dollar is taxed at 4.7% by Missouri — on top of federal income tax and 7.65% FICA.
Kansas City and St. Louis earnings tax
If you live or work in Kansas City or St. Louis, your employer also withholds a 1% city earnings tax. This calculator shows state and federal taxes only — subtract 1% of gross pay if the earnings tax applies to you.
No state disability deduction
Missouri has no state disability or paid-leave payroll deduction, so only income taxes and FICA come out of your check besides your own benefits.
