No state income tax — only federal tax and FICA come out of a Texas paycheck.

What comes out of a Texas paycheck

Federal income tax is withheld using the IRS Publication 15-T percentage method and your W-4. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to the yearly wage base, and Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% above $200,000. That's it — Texas has no state income tax, no state disability insurance deduction and no city wage taxes.

Why Texas take-home pay is higher

Compared with California, a Texas worker skips state income tax and the 1.3% SDI deduction. On a $100,000 salary that's several thousand dollars a year — see the California vs Texas comparison for the exact numbers at your salary.

Hourly and overtime pay in Texas

Texas follows the federal overtime rule: time-and-a-half after 40 hours in a workweek. There is no daily overtime as in California. Switch the calculator to hourly mode and enter your weekly overtime hours.
