Gross pay vs. net pay

Gross pay is what you earn before anything is taken out — your salary divided by pay periods, or your hours times your rate. Net pay is what lands in your bank account after taxes and deductions.

The net pay formula

Net pay = gross pay − pre-tax deductions − federal income tax − Social Security − Medicare − state and local taxes − after-tax deductions.

Most people keep roughly 65–80% of gross pay. Where you land depends on your income, your state (from 0% state tax in Texas or Florida to income tax plus disability and paid-leave premiums in California or New York City) and how much you put into pre-tax benefits.

Frequently asked questions

What is net pay?+

Net pay is your take-home pay: gross pay minus taxes (federal, FICA, state, local) and deductions (401(k), insurance and others).

How do I calculate net pay from gross?+

Subtract pre-tax deductions, then withholding taxes, then after-tax deductions from your gross pay. This calculator does it with the 2026 IRS and state withholding tables.

Is net pay the same as take-home pay?+

Yes — net pay and take-home pay mean the same thing.

Why is my net pay different from last year?+

Tax tables, the Social Security wage base and benefit premiums change every January, and your W-4, raise or benefit elections may have changed too.
